What’s a coverstitch machine and why do you need one?
Sewing knit fabric is on the rise. Whether you’re emulating your own RTW wardrobe and sewing jersey or challenging yourself with the new trend for sewing activewear, you might want to consider a coverstitch machine as your next sewing investment.
A coverstitch machine’s main function, amongst others is to create perfect hems and is suitable to use on all type of garments, including those made from knit fabrics, sewing everything from basic two way stretch jersey through to specialist sportwear fabrics. The stitches are known as coverstitches and often have the appearance of twin needle stitching, from the right side, but when flipped over have a complex arrangement of stitches, which will allow the fabric to stretch. With two or three needle options, a coverstitch machine sews in a similar way to a regular sewing machine, in that it simply stitches through layer of fabric, rather than trimming the edge of the fabric as an overlocker would.
Although this machine may appear to be a one trick pony, it can achieve hems and seams quickly and easily, as well as sewing topstitching, attaching lace, trims and other embellishments and extra accessories are available such as attachments for gathering elastic and binding tape.
So for those of you, wanting to achieve a truly professional finish to you your garment, in the most time efficient way, a coverstitch is definitely worth the investment.
